Smithtown supervisor, managers union agree to new four-year contract
Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and the union representing the town’s department chiefs and other managers have agreed to a new four-year contract.
The deal, which is awaiting town board approval, calls for a combined 4 percent raise spread over the length of the contract. Vecchio said the pact has been ratified by the Smithtown Administrators Guild, which has about 30 members.
The contract, which is retroactive to January 2011 and expires in December 2014, includes lower salaries for some recently hired administrators and requires new hires to pay more for health insurance, Vecchio said.
A town board resolution on the contract failed Tuesday by a 2-2 vote; councilmen Robert Creighton and Kevin Malloy voted against the pact, and Councilman Edward Wehrheim was absent. Vecchio said a new vote would be taken on April 25.
Creighton, who is trying to unseat Vecchio, a fellow Republican, in this year’s elections said he is awaiting an analysis by town comptroller Louis Necroto. “I just want to hear from the comptroller that we can afford it,” Creighton said. “If it’s all right, then I’ll vote for the contract.”
