Southwest Airlines customers at Long Island MacArthur Airport gained easier access to a host of Caribbean destinations, town officials announced Monday.

By combining its flight network with its subsidiary carrier Air Tran Airways, Southwest is offering customers at MacArthur and other airports across the country connecting service to Aruba, Netherlands Antilles; Cancun, Mexico; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Nassau, Bahamas; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, officials said.

The change took effect Sunday.

“We’re really excited to give our customers the access to get to even more destinations, especially the international destinations,” Southwest spokeswoman Katie McDonald said.

Southwest, which only flies domestically, is preparing to offer international flights of its own by the end of 2014, she said.

A MacArthur customer interested in visiting the new destinations offered through the Southwest-Air Tran partnership would typically take a connecting flight from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, where Air Tran offers flights to several Caribbean destinations, she said.

“We are proud to support this long-awaited connection from MacArthur to the Caribbean,” Supervisor Tom Croci said in a statement. “We continue to work with our airline partners to offer more choices to destinations that the flying public has asked of their town for many years.”
