East Meadow is named for its location, according to the hamlet's Chamber of Commerce website. In 1655, Thomas Langdon reported at the Hempstead Town meeting that he surveyed the "East Meadow" and found it suitable for the grazing and watering of cattle. (March 12, 2012) (Credit: Nicole Bartoline)

Veterans Memorial Park in East Meadow will host National Night Out, a nationwide anti-crime event, on Tuesday.

Anyone from Nassau County is invited to the event, during which county police will provide information about public safety. Refreshments and games will be available.

The event is designed to “heighten crime and drug prevention and awareness” and “send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back,” organizers said in a statement.

The event begins at 7 p.m. The park is at the intersection of Prospect and East Meadow avenues.

Additional information is available at nationalnightout.org.

Nassau Legis. Norma L. Gonsalves can be reached for information at 516-571-6213.
