State Senate candidates at Brentwood forum

Candidates for the 4th State Senate District will answer questions from advocates working with minority communities at a forum taking place Wednesday evening.

Assemb. Phil Boyle (R-Bay Shore) and Suffolk County Legis. Ricardo Montano (D-Brentwood), contending for the district that encompasses parts of the towns of Babylon and Islip, have confirmed attendance, said Daniel Altschuler, coordinator of the Long Island Civic Engagement Table, an umbrella advocacy group in minority communities.

The candidates seek to replace retiring Sen. Owen Johnson (R-West Babylon) in a racially and economically diverse area of South Shore communities such as Brentwood, West Islip, Copiague, Wyandanch and Holbrook.

The forum is co-hosted by Spanish-language newspaper Noticia and Long Island Wins, an immigrant-advocacy organization in Old Westbury. It will take place at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Brentwood Public Library, at 34 2nd Ave. in Brentwood.

The candidates will answer questions about the economy, the district’s diverse communities and social policy, Altschuler said. The forum will be simultaneously translated into Spanish.

“Our core function is to increase civic participation across communities of color,” Altschuler said, “so we are bringing together community groups that work with those constituents and their concerns.”
