Substitutions authorized for Smithtown highway superintendent candidates
Substitutions were selected and authorized for Smithtown highway superintendent candidates on a petition generated by a former town highway superintendent.
Daniel Donnelly went to the board of elections Monday to file an authorization for political unknown Thomas D. McCarthy on behalf of the Independence Party, said Smithtown GOP chairman Bill Ellis, who is also a deputy commissioner at the board of elections.
Democrats also selected McCarthy — not to be confused with Smithtown Councilman Thomas McCarthy, who is up for re-election with Conservative and Republican backing — as a candidate for highway superintendent on Friday.
Thomas D. McCarthy will face incumbent Glenn Jorgensen, who has Conservative and Republican backing.
“Those parties can choose whoever they want, but they’re going to have to contend with Mr. Jorgensen on the Conservative line,” Ellis said. “I feel that Mr. Jorgensen will win handily; no doubt about that.”
McCarthy did not immediately return a call for comment.
Smithtown Democratic chairman Ed Maher said he met with McCarthy last week and “was impressed with him.”
“He worked for Kathy Walsh when she ran for highway superintendent in Brookhaven . . . Even though he’s a Conservative, he’s worked with Democrats in the past,” Maher said. “He brings with him the Independent Party’s endorsement . . . We’re happy to have him on the line and we’re looking forward to him winning.”
There will not be a Democratic or Independence party primary, because no one is challenging those parties’ candidates, Ellis said.
The Smithtown Conservative and Republican primaries will be held on Sept. 10.
