Suffolk farmers market event to feature local crops
On Friday, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and several dozen Suffolk farmers will host a one-time farmers market featuring locally grown fresh produce, farm tours and wagon rides.
The second annual Celebrate Grown on Long Island Day will be held at the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank and run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The market will celebrate Long Island’s farming industry, according to a county news release; Suffolk is the single most productive agricultural county in the state. Some 35 farms will be represented.
Products that will be sold range from roasted corn to freshly caught fish, and local chefs will hold a seafood cooking competition.
Joe Gergela, executive director of the Long Island Farm Bureau, said the event was conceived with the idea of supporting local farming.
“My idea a couple years ago was to try to bring some excitement to the local food movement,” Gergela said, adding that the bureau often fields inquiries about how Long Islanders can support local farmers. “My response is the best thing they can do is buy local.”
The event is sponsored by the County Executive’s Office, the Long Island Farm Bureau, Cornell Cooperative Extension, LI Wine Council, Peconic Land Trust, Island Harvest, J. King, Harbor View Foods, Inc., Farm Credit East and the magazine Edible East End.
