Suffolk legislators again help needy kids
Members of the Suffolk County Legislature are participating for the sixth straight year in a program meant to help provide school supplies and clothes to needy children.
Presiding Officer William Lindsay (D-Holbrook) and other legislators throughout the county are partnering with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, Every Child’s Dream and Holiday Magic to collect items including writing instruments, crayons, shoes, glue, markers and pencil boxes. The supplies will be given out to up to 500 children from area homeless shelters and foster care families at an annual event dubbed the Backpack Pirates Summer Festival on Aug. 27 in Riverhead, said Greta Guarton, executive director of the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.
In addition to receiving supplies for school during the program, children at the elementary, junior and high school grade levels will be provided with breakfast and lunch, and will participate in age-appropriate activities.
“I am asking our community to help collect school supplies because it is important for all children to start off the school year right,” Legis. Steve Stern (D-Dix Hills) said in a news release. “Please help this worthy cause by donating these much needed supplies.”
