Tina Giles named police officer of the year by East Hampton Town
East Hampton Town police detective Tina Giles has been named police officer of the year by the town board, which cited her work last year in a juvenile sex abuse case that ultimately led to the arrest of Fidel Castro-Brito of East Hampton on multiple charges of felony rape and predatory sexual abuse.
His trial is scheduled for next month.
Giles was honored by the town board earlier this month, and Police Chief Edward Ecker praised her for “fantastic police work,” which led to the identification of three alleged victims. She is the only female detective employed by the small police department.
Giles, who has been with the department for 27 years, started as a traffic control officer in the summer while at college.
She was also recognized for her police work in January by the Southampton Kiwanis Club, which gave her its top honor, the Howard Stock Memorial Award. She is the first woman in 43 years to be picked for that award, which is open to every town and village police officer on the East End, as well as state troopers and other law enforcement agents.
