Town Focus: Day 3 in Smithtown
I’m halfway through our weeklong focus of Smithtown, but I still have a lot more to show you. And I think you most likely have more to show me.
First thing’s first. I’m touring Smithtown’s Main Street with Chamber of Commerce President Mark Mancini, snapping photos of storefronts and restaurants along the way.
At about the same time, my Newsday colleague, Tara Conry, is speaking with Craig Cooper, of the Parent-Teacher Association Dads Committee, and Smithtown Elementary School principal Janine Lavery to discuss the unique committee, which began three years ago to get dads more engaged with their kids at school. Don’t forget to follow Tara throughout the day via Twitter @TaraKConry.
Later in the morning, I’m meeting with Smithtown Superintendent Anthony Annunziato to discuss the school district, which residents I’ve spoken to have been raving about.
By popular request, I’ll top off my morning getting breakfast at Maureen’s Kitchen with Mary Ellen Jones, a lifelong resident of Smithtown, to discuss growing up here.
Breakfast will then charge me up to stop by the Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts to learn more about the old theater that used to be in its place and thrived in the 1930s.
Later in the week, I’ll be stopping by the Sweetbriar Nature Preserve and various spots along the Nissequogue River to check out the view.
Stay tuned. You won’t want to miss out.
