The Town of North Hempstead on Thursday purchased three properties, including a vacant house, in Port Washington that will be converted into a parking lot to ease the parking crunch in the area’s commercial corridor.

Under the purchase plan, which was approved by the town board in October, the Port Washington Public Parking District bought properties at 5 Main St., 1070 Port Washington Blvd., and 6 Ohio Ave., for $898,000, minus $15,000 that the sellers contributed toward demolition costs.

The properties will be converted into about 30 parking spaces, which currently are planned as reserved for the area’s merchants and employees, with areas of green space and bicycle parking, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman said.

Kaiman said the goal is for the town to demolish the house, which has been boarded up and vacant for decades, within the first quarter of 2013.

Design work on the parking lot will begin next week, he said.

“It’s time to bring it back to the community and provide both utility and something that’s attractive from a community perspective,” he said.

But the plan had drawn concerns from Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio, who represents Port Washington. In October, she had asked the board to hold off purchasing the properties, citing the impact to the parking district and saying she wanted time to come up with a cheaper alternative to ease the area’s parking woes.
