Trayvon Martin rally set for N. Amityville
More than 30 churches and community groups will protest Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law on Saturday in North Amityville.
A spokesman for the Ministerial Alliance of North Amityville and Vicinity, which is organizing the rally, called the law “instrumental” in the death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager shot to death by a crime watch volunteer Feb. 26.
The law gives people wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight. George Zimmerman, Martin’s shooter, told police he was acting in self-defense.
The rally is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Bolden Mack Park, on Great Neck Road in North Amityville. In case of rain, it will take place at Freedom Chapel, 641 Broadway in Amityville.
Participants are asked to wear hooded sweatshirts, as Martin did on the night of his death.
