Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano is inviting veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts to enter a lottery for a brand-new house built by Homes for Homecoming Heroes, Inc. on a site in Hicksville donated by the county.

The not-for-profit corporation will pick a qualified veteran needing housing and build a home at the site to suit the specific needs of the veteran, who can then purchase the home for the construction cost.

“I am thrilled that Nassau County was able to partner with Homes for Homecoming Heroes to provide a veteran with this wonderful opportunity to own a home in Nassau,” said Mangano, who has initiated two other county housing programs for veterans.

Last year, the county Legislature approved Mangano’s plan for sale of a vacant county-owned property in Hicksville to Homes for Homecoming Heroes -- a volunteer agency with a mission to build affordable housing for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The agency coordinates the construction of homes by volunteer BOCES students, building professionals and other volunteer groups. With labor and materials donations, the estimated cost to build a 1,500-square-foot home with an attached garage is about $150,000. Construction is set to begin next month.

Veterans must have served in Iraq or Afghanistan within the last 12 years, earn a minimum of $47,000 annually in total family yearly income, and qualify for a mortgage. A 1 percent down payment is required, with the principal repaid over a 30-year period. For more information or to receive an application, contact Larry Sklar at Homes for Homecoming Heroes at 646-641-8460 or write to the agency at P.O. Box 20, Jericho, NY 11753.

The application deadline is Nov. 1. Those interested should send a self-addressed,  stamped envelope to the above address along with a short biography with their military information.
