With the privilege of Long Islanders to live on the water comes the responsibility to protect it.

In Thursday night's town hall discussion, “What's in the Water,“ a panel of experts discussed topics ranging from Superfund sites to nitrogen pollution — and what's being done and by whom to ensure the quality of the Island's drinking and coastal waters.

Part of a Newsday/News 12 Long Island special report, the forum also opened the floor to audience members.

The panel includes:

- Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment

- Richard Amper, executive director of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society

- Kevin McAllister, Peconic Baykeeper president

- Dennis Kelleher, president of H2M water resource engineers and a consultant to 30 water suppliers on Long Island

- James Gaughran, Suffolk County Water Authority chairman

- New York State Assemb. Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst), chairman of the Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation

- New York State Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset)

- Walter Dawydiak, acting director of environmental quality for Suffolk County's Department of Health Services

- Dr. Amy Juchatz, Suffolk County health department environmental toxicologist

-Legis. William Spencer (D-Centerport)
