Wyandanch clothing drive kicks off Saturday
Wyandanch is hosting a clothing donation event Saturday that will serve as a kickoff to a larger clothing drive.
The event, called Ujima Day, for the Kiswahili word meaning collective work and responsibility, will take place at Wyandanch Memorial High School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those in need can pick up free clothing if they register and have identification. Same-day registration is allowed for the event, which is open to all ages. Those interested can call 631-782-5136 or 631-748-8190 for more information.
Anyone interested in donating clothes should also call and be prepared to drop the clothes off Friday evening, said Heath Broughton, head of Man in the Mirror, one of the organizations behind the event. Other groups involved are the Wyandanch PTO and Compass Coalition.
The event is the start of a more expansive program being put together with help from Legis. DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville). The program, Armani’s Closet, aims to provide youngsters and adults with proper professional attire for events ranging from sports award dinners to job interviews.
“We’ve heard it over and over: people trying to enter the workforce and they have to go into an interview and they don’t have a tie or a dress shirt,” Gregory said. “So we’re trying to address that need.”
