Roundup: LIE now has 10 pullover areas

The state has completed six new law-enforcement “pullover areas” along the Long Island Expressway, providing additional space for police to conduct traffic stops, according to the Cuomo administration.

On Aug. 7, 1974, French tightrope walker Philippe Petit made headlines when he walked fearlessly between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Brookhaven Town demolishes home, charges owner with violations

Brookhaven Town has torn down a Medford house for alleged safety violations.

The house, at 77 Whitepine Way, was razed on Tuesday because it was “unfit for human occupancy due to a collapsed ceiling, rotted main floor support, large holes in the side walls, interior walls blocked from garbage and debris restricting a clear egress,” town officials said Thursday in a news release.

Roundup: Grant to United Way funds youth program

The United Way of Long Island was recently granted $1.1 million in federal funding for a program aimed at helping at-risk youth earn degrees while building job skills.The U.S. Department of Labor funding will aid the YouthBuild Long Island program, which helps local youth earn their high school equivalency diploma while also learning eco-friendly construction skills by building housing for the homeless.

Shuttered Deer Park adult store Teasers has lost a legal bid to reopen while its lawsuit against the Town of Babylon proceeds.

The July 28 decision from U.S. District Judge Sandra J. Feuerstein came as the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals released a decision denying several Teasers requests for variances from town code regulating adult businesses.

Roundup: Projects reviewed to lower Suffolk County debt

Suffolk budget officials have identified $73 million in projects the county can remove from its books as part of an effort to reduce $429 million in county debt.
