Hunger Games lesson at Patchogue archery school

Students at a Patchogue archery school might not have plans to fight to the death like Jennifer Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen did in the Hunger Games, but they were trained the same way over the weekend.

Experienced, beginner and intermediate archers and coaches learned crossbow techniques from Lawrence’s trainer Khatuna Lorig, who is a five-time Olympian and Olympic bronze medalist.

The Port Jefferson Village Board is scheduled to hold a public hearing Monday night on a proposed budget that would raise taxes about 4.4 percent.

Babylon Village adopted a $9.3 million budget last week for the 2014-15 fiscal year starting June 1.

The budget includes a 4.84 percent property tax levy increase, bringing the tax rate per $100 of assessed valuation to $14.93. For a house assessed at $10,000, Mayor Ralph Scordino said, property taxes will rise about $70.

Frank Scafuri has been to doctors’ offices five times in the past nine months, but the 63-year-old Rockville Centre resident isn’t sick.

He shows up to bring a healthy dose of entertainment to the patients.

Since posting a clip of himself on YouTube performing a Broadway show tune in the waiting room of a Williston Park doctor’s office in September, Scafuri has recorded four more videos.

Smithtown Town Board members have unanimously approved an amendment to the town code that raise the maximum amounts for towing fees for vehicles.

Miss Harper, the 10-month-old pit bull puppy found with its ears and hind right leg cut off last September, was reunited with its mother at My Pet’s Vet in Huntington on Thursday.

Her mother Missy, 7, was a victim of overbreeding, and Miss Harper was in one of her litters.

Bay Shore microbrewery gets OK for larger bar

Islip’s only microbrewery is getting a larger bar to showcase its frosty beverages.

The Islip Town planning board approved the Great South Bay Brewery’s application for a special permit to operate a larger bar inside its site at 25 Drexel Dr. in Bay Shore.

The board voted 5-1 to approve the permit at its Thursday meeting. Board member Michael Kennedy voted against the application.
