Demolition plan hearing delayed for village theater

A much-delayed public hearing on a controversial plan to demolish the historic First Playhouse Theater in Great Neck Estates to build an apartment building has been postponed indefinitely after the mayor said many questions about the proposal remain unanswered.

Walt Whitman site designated a ‘Literary Landmark’

The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site in Huntington Station has been designated a “Literary Landmark” by the American Library Association’s United for Libraries division.

A dedication ceremony is planned at 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at the site, 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd.

Old Town Road to close for repaving

A portion of Old Town Road in Setauket will be closed for two nights this week for a repaving project.

The road will be closed from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday between State Route 347 and Sheep Pasture Road, said Frank Petrignani, a spokesman for Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro.
