Valerie Pfundstein, a kindergarten support specialist at Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa Park, has written the children's book "Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood," about a young boy who learns about veterans in school and discovers that military heroes can be found living within his community.

A character in “Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood” is based on Edna Coby, 90 of Deer Park, who served in the U.S. Navy. Coby is author Valerie Pfundstein's neighbor.

Edna Coby, 90, of Deer Park, lost her son Jonathan, 22. He was killed during an army training exercise, jumping out of a helicopter in 1982.

Valerie Pfundstein invited former Marine Cpl. Manny Jimenez, who received a Purple Heart after he was severely wounded two years ago in Afghanistan, to her kindergarten class at Birch Lane Elementary School in Massapequa Park in November 2011. The experience helped motivate Pfundstein to write the children's book “Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood.”

Valerie Pfundstein, 47, of Deer Park, has written a children's rhyming picture book, “Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood,” to be released on Veterans Day. One of the characters is based on her grandfather Frank Falotico, who served in the Navy during World War II and died in 1983 at age 74.
