Last year the Peconic Bay Sailing Association’s Sunset Race was nearly postponed due to a lack of wind. This year? Hello, Earl.

The race, which was scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow off New Suffolk, is being called off for now as the East End braces for the hurricane to swing near the Island’s tip tomorrow. The race is the last of five races in the 2010 New Suffolk Series.

"Last year was frustrating; we had two or three knots of wind. Boats were floating around in flat, calm waters. This year we had to postpone due to the tropical storm warning," said series Chairman Brian Andrews.

Andrews said the organization may have then event either on Sept. 5, or Sept. 12.

"We generaly get about 20 boats, which  for an East End series is extremely good."

Next on the agenda for the PBSA is the Oct. 2 White Bread, which usually attracts125 boats, Andrews said.
