MIDDLETOWN - Officials say a knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police at a convenience store in Middletown.

The shooting occurred at Sam's Mart on Academy Avenue at around 4 p.m.

Store employee Imran Diaz says he called police after two of his regular customers got into an altercation that started inside his store. He says he watched as one man pulled a knife on the other.

Investigators say after two veteran police officers arrived on the scene, they shot the man with the knife.

The victim later died at a local hospital.

Police have not released why they shot the man or how many times.

State police and the Orange County District Attorney have taken over the case from Middletown police. They say their goal is to get all the facts, before they draw any conclusions about the shooting.
