JERSEY CITY - Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has announced that Officer Melvin Santiago, who was killed in the line of duty Sunday, will be posthumously promoted to the rank of detective.
Santiago will also receive the department’s Medal of Honor.
The promotion and honor ceremony will take place at the officer’s wake on Thursday evening.
Santiago was killed in the line of duty early Sunday while responding to a report of an armed robbery at a 24-hour pharmacy.
The 23-year-old was shot by a man who had stolen a security guard's gun and waited for officers to arrive.
Santiago had been on the force for less than a year, but had wanted to be a police officer since he was in his teens.
Gov. Chris Christie has ordered flags at state office buildings to be flown at half-staff Wednesday for the fallen officer.
