LAKE CARMEL - A Putnam County woman has been charged in connection to an international Internet scheme aimed at defrauding people looking for jobs online.

Monica McCurdy, 46, of Lake Carmel, is facing grand larceny charges.

Investigators say McCurdy sent phony checks and money orders to people answering online job ads, asking them to deposit the checks into their own accounts, and then wire the money somewhere else.

The Putnam County sheriff says McCurdy's scheme involved co-conspirators from South Africa, Malaysia and Dubai.

The victims were from New York, and more than a dozen other states.
