We met the band R5 -- Ellington Ratliff, Riker Lynch, Ross Lynch, Rydel Lynch and Rocky Lynch -- before a recent performance at the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan. They were premiering their #RockThanRockMusic video. After interviewing them we stayed for their show.
Who is the smart one in the group?
Ross: He's [Ratliff] got a good vocabulary, he's [Riker] good with fashion, she's [Rydel] good with geography.
Is there any song by any other artist that you would like to perform?
Riker: There's a couple. We're loving doing "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince on tour right now.
Ratliff: We also do a OneRepublic cover "Counting Stars."
Ross: Another cover we also like to do is "Seven Nation Army" by White Stripes. It's cool because I don't have to say anything. I just kind of like rock out and I get to play the solo.
Who is the funny one in the group?
Ratliff: It's very debatable. Me and Rocky like to tag team. We're like Batman and Robin.
Do you have any nervous habits or superstitions?
Ratliff: I play with my hands.
Rydel: If it's like my solo keyboard part coming up, I got to like pop all the knuckles (makes gestures with her hands) to get the jitters out.
Riker: I usually do this sometimes (pointing to his leg jumping up and down) and it drives people crazy. Stop. What you do is you hold this one down.
Ross: I don't know why I did this. Before I go on a show, I'm just not going to look in the mirror like a few hours before the show. I just avoid a mirror. I don't know why I did it.
What do you spend your money on?
Riker: Food, water, shelter, dates. Dates actually. Girls are expensive. Taking a girl on a date.
Ross: Honestly I haven't spent a penny.
Riker: Ross built a guitar. He bought all the parts. He bought his computer.
What are your hobbies other than music?
Riker: Ice hockey
Ratliff: Sing to records
Rocky: Watching sports
