Newark Mayor Cory Booker authorizes $1M more to city police following crime wave

Newark officers were also told this week that the city will extend its Safe Summer Initiative through Sept. 9.

NEWARK - Newark Mayor Cory Booker is taking action after his city saw nine shootings in nine days.

Booker authorized an additional $1 million in police overtime through the end of the year after speaking with Newark Police Director Sam DeMaio on Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, the city began Operation Blue Zone, a program that sends concentrated police resources into an undisclosed area of the city. Newark officers were also told this week that the city will extend its Safe Summer Initiative through Sept. 9.

Nine people have been shot and killed in Newark since Aug. 26. At least five of the victims are believed to have drug or gang connections.
