Police are searching for an assailant who shot a teenager in the leg Thursday night in Newburgh.

City police officers met with a 17-year-old city resident at 10:21 p.m. in the emergency room at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital's Newburgh campus after hearing a report he had been shot. They determined the teen was walking in the area of Fullerton Avenue and First Street when he heard an argument nearby, police said.

The victim heard a gunshot and began to run, police said, then felt a pain in his left thigh and discovered he had been shot. He was taken by a private car to the hospital with what police said were injuries that are not life-threatening. No further information on his condition was available Friday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Newburgh police detectives at 845-561-3131.
