Boy, 12, hurt in fall down elevator shaft

An 12-year-old boy fell three stories down an elevator shaft in Mount Vernon of Sunday, suffering leg injuries, officials said.

The incident happened at 111 N. Third Ave., Mount Vernon Fire Department officials confirmed.

The boy's name was not disclosed. The apartment building has seven stories.

Three or four boys were playing in the building around 12:45 p.m. when the elevator doors opened and the boy fell, officials added. One of the boys then summoned police, who were in the area on an unrelated call.

Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Duffy said the victim was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Residents of the building said there have been frequent problems with the elevators.
