'Heavy smoke' reported at Hauppauge building

Police said firefighters have responded to a call reporting a "heavy smoke condition" Thursday at a commercial building in Hauppauge belonging to a manufacturer of components of satellite communications and military electronic countermeasures systems.

Suffolk County police and fire officials could not immediately say if firefighters found a fire at the Miteq building on Davids Drive. Fire officials said volunteers from the Hauppauge Fire Department were dispatched to the scene; police said a 911 call was received at 5:06 a.m.

Police said only that the caller said there was "heavy smoke" coming from the top of the building -- but said it was unclear if there was a fire.

According to its website, Miteq's "components and systems are supplied to a wide variety of military and commercial markets." Those markets include satellite and ground-based communications systems, missile guidance, military electronic countermeasures, radar warning and surveillance systems, air traffic control radar and radio astronomy.
