Indy chair backs GOP's Losquadro for B'khaven highway post
Frank MacKay, state and Suffolk Independence Party chairman, has decided to back Assemb. Dan Losquadro (R-Shoreham) in the March 5 special election for Brookhaven highway superintendent, even though his opponent, town board member Kathleen Walsh, filed papers earlier this month to join MacKay’s minor party.
MacKay filed nominating papers with the Suffolk Board of elections on Monday but could not immediately be reached for comment.
Earlier, the minor party leader expressed concerns about candidates joining his party simply to get its endorsement and then leverage major parties. He also said that Republican Walsh, who got the Democrats’ backing for highway race, does not officially become a member of the Independence Party until after Election Day in November. That means she could still run a Republican town board primary if she does not win the highway job and the GOP denies her renomination.
