Republican George Demos got a boost Thursday when former Gov. George Pataki endorsed his congressional candidacy.

Demos, a Brookhaven attorney, is running again for the 1st Congressional District on the eastern end of Long Island, even though he failed to win the GOP nomination in 2010 and 2012. State Sen. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) also has declared his candidacy and has lined up support from Suffolk GOP chairman John Jay LaValle and the Suffolk Conservative Party. The Republicans are looking to take on incumbent Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton).

Pataki’s endorsement is easily the biggest lift Demos has received so far. He said Demos would be a “new voice” that would help “end the gridlock” in Washington, D.C.

"I am proud to endorse George Demos for Congress,” the former governor said in a statement. “George's impressive work prosecuting corporate corruption as an enforcement attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission is a demonstration of the strength of character necessary to be an effective advocate for Long Islanders.”
