Finding a cap for a metal chimney
Q. We have a metal chimney that is used for venting the boiler. A chimney cap was added several years ago, and we were told it was stainless steel. However, it has rusted and made a mess of our new roof. I have been looking for a new cap, but the local home centers seem to have caps only for brick chimneys. Can you suggest anywhere else I can look for this cap? It measures about 18 inches, square. -- Ken Capel, Middle Island
A. Try Volko Supply Online in Garden City Park (www. volko.com). The company deals in chimney caps, weather vanes, cupolas and all types of vents and flashing for roofs.
I have a problem with a chimney that is allowing huge bursts of cold air to enter my family room in the winter months, even when the damper and the glass doors are closed. I spoke to one of the representatives at Volko, and I'm pretty sure they've helped me solve my problem.
Call Volko (516-741-4466) to explain your problem. You might have to bring a photograph of the existing cap to the company.
Another source is Chim Cap Corp. in Farmingdale, which manufactures all types of chimney supplies. Although the company doesn't sell to the public, call 631-454-7576 and ask for Debbie. She can provide insight. Tell her I sent you.
