HER STORY Diagnosed with diabetes at age 9, Amanda Goldberg says that's when her size began to fluctuate from skinny to overweight.

"I was tall and carried my weight well," says the budding tennis pro, who also helps out in her parents' bagel stores,

Goldberg's Famous Bagels and Deli in Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk. "It was after an injury in college that my weight shot to 200 pounds and beyond."

It had been her dream since age 6 to play professional tennis. Unfortunately the added weight was slowing her down on the court and pushing her dream further and further away.

"A good friend who is very familiar with the tennis industry told me if I'd lose a few pounds, I'd be faster on the court and would be closer to achieving my goals," Goldberg remembers.

She first turned to a weight-loss clinic and dropped 20 pounds. She then moved to Florida part-time to continue her training and met people who encouraged her to wean herself off various foods to improve her health and speed healing from injuries. Off limit were foods containing gluten, processed foods, red meat, turkey, soft drinks with carbonation and anything with hidden calories from sugar.

"I started by not shopping in the middle aisles," Goldberg says. "I read up on how to eat for your blood type, alternative proteins and a plant-based diet. It was a weaning process -- a patience process."

DIET "I thought I was a healthy eater, but really wasn't," Goldberg says.

Today, she is a pescetarian, which is someone who eats fish but not other meats.

She starts the day with a vegetable-based protein shake with almond milk. Lunch is usually vegetable sushi or a large salad. Dinner is often vegetables and a piece of fish.

EXERCISE Always active because of tennis, she has stepped up her intensity. During the winter season, she trains five hours a day, five days a week, spending four hours on the court and one hour in the gym. This includes weight and fitness training and high-intensity classes such as spin and boxing.

ADVICE "You have to want to get in shape for yourself," Goldberg says. "You have people who want to help motivate you, but at the end of the day, you have to be your own motivation. It has to be about you and your health."
