With celebrities like Kate Middleton stepping out with flat bellies weeks after giving birth, the public expectation of what postpartum recovery really looks like has become blurred. In an attempt to rectify this and show the world what a woman's body actually looks like after pregnancy, one brave mother posted photos of her transformation online.
Nutritionist Julie Bhosale says she shared her postpartum body transformation with the Internet to combat society's view that the female body can just "bounce back" immediately after giving birth.
"For most of us, our bodies change, and change a lot. It is scary, it is hard, it can be downright disgusting and upsetting but it is real and normal," she writes.
She starts at just 24 hours postpartum, with her new baby boy in her arms. One week later, she's still rocking pajamas and says she has a "lumpy, squishy watermelon belly."
By 14 weeks, the end of her shared journey, Bhosale's little boy has grown, and so has her smile.
But her stomach, although now flat, is still "left with the marks of motherhood." Her scars have not healed, stretch marks are still present and she's come to the realization that she (and other moms) will have to give up their dreams of becoming bikini models.
"I had no idea that my body would be quite like it did after having a baby. Nobody talks to you about it so I just wanted to be open about the fact that there are so many ways your body goes through a massive change," she said to BuzzFeed.
The new mom hopes that her photos will help remind women that their beauty comes from within.
"You are beautiful, you are amazing, you are a mother," she writes.
