Lake Ronkonkoma Beach, which was closed Monday to swimming after blue-green algae was discovered, has reopened, said Suffolk County health officials.

Recent samples showed water quality was at acceptable levels, officials said Tuesday.

Some species of the algae, known formally as cyanobacteria, "produce toxins that can cause health problems in humans and animals if exposed to large enough quantities," said Dr. James Tomarken, commissioner of health services.
