Cila was severely injured outside the Green Zone in Iraq where he and his fellow soldiers were stationed five years ago. An improvised explosive device detonated and he suffered a devastating injury to the left side of his body. Forty surgeries over a three-year period could not restore function to his hand, so he chose to have it amputated. He has been fitted with several special "bionic" hands equipped with microprocessors that allow him to excel as a competitive cyclist and triathlete. (March 16, 2010)
