Nassau County will be distributing raccoon rabies vaccine bait, weather permitting, from Monday to Oct. 14, in the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, focusing on raccoon habitats such as woods, bushes, stream beds and sewers, according to the county health department.

No rabid raccoon has been confirmed in the county since 2007, but the baiting activity needs to continue to maintain that record, health officials said.

Rabies, transmitted from the bite of an infected animal, is fatal once clinical signs of infection occur, the health department said.

The bait packets, which look like brown briquettes, are labeled "Rabies Vaccine Live Vaccinia Vector. Do Not Disturb."

The bait, which has a strong fishmeal smell, is attractive to raccoons and is not harmful to humans, dogs or cats, the health department said. Still, health officials advise the following:

If a child bites through the packet and ingests the liquid, or you see a pet with bait in its mouth, call the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222 as a precaution.

Keep all dogs and cats indoors or on leashes when the bait is distributed and for about a week following to allow raccoons to eat the vaccine-laden baits.
