As a result of bacteria found at levels higher than state standards, Lake Ronkonkoma Beach, in the town of Islip, and Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore have been closed to swimming, Suffolk County health officials said Thursday.

Tanner Park Beach in Copiague, which had been closed to swimmers for the same reason, has been reopened thanks to recent water samples that meet state standards, county health officials said.

Swimming in such contaminated water “can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat,” said Dr. James Tomarken, county health commissioner.

To stay up to date on affected beaches, residents can call the county’s bathing beach hotline at 631-852-5822.
