Flying Into History
The Cradle Rocks
A supersonic F-11A Tiger hangs from the ceiling like a 45-foot-long bolt of blue lightning. It will be the first thing most visitors notice as they enter the spacious new glass atrium of the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
Don't Miss These Ten Gems
The sheer size of a Blue Angels fighter jet or the historic impact of a lunar module is likely to grab the attention of visitors to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, but don't forget about the "smaller” exhibits.
Priceless Contributions
In a dark hangar in Garden City one day in late April, 81-year-old Charles Svatek beams at an obsession -- a replica of a 1938 Grumman biplane. The aircraft, which he and a 15-man team built from scratch, is nearly ready to be moved next door to the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
Experience IMAX, With Sights, Sound All Around
Stepping into the Leroy R. and Rose Grumman IMAX Theater in the new Cradle of Aviation Museum can be a slightly dizzying experience. The 300-seat theater is a 7-story-high, 76-foot-wide dome that sweeps overhead and behind you. With your eyes fooled by the lack of straight walls, you might sway just for a moment.
Mitchel, Not Mitchell
There it was in the 2001 blockbuster "Pearl Harbor." As hotshot young pilots buzzed a Long Island military base, the camera panned past a sign that said MITCHELL FIELD.
Even More to Come
The Cradle of Aviation Museum and the Long Island Children's Museum are the pillars of the long-planned Nassau County museum row that has been in the works for 25 years or longer.
