A speeding driver was killed Saturday on the Wantagh State Parkway when his sports car went off the road and struck a tree, destroying the front end of the convertible, according to New York State Police and a witness.
The crash occurred at 12:01 p.m. when the driver, headed north on the parkway, lost control of a red 2003 Corvette just north of Sunrise Highway, went off the left side of the road, and hit a tree, police said.
The driver was taken by ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:44 p.m. His name has been withheld pending notification of a family member.
Police said witness accounts and the preliminary investigation showed the driver was traveling at an unsafe speed.
