Officials eye funds for Point Lookout beaches
Members of the State Legislature say they have secured millions in state funding to protect the badly eroded beaches of Point Lookout at the eastern tip of Long Beach Island.
State Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) and Assemb. Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach) have scheduled a news conference this morning in Point Lookout to announce the additional funding, expected to total $25 million.
Last month, Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) earmarked $4.6 million for the effort in a federal appropriations bill.
The exact nature of the project has not yet been determined, but it will involve dredging the shallow waters of Jones Inlet to the east and dumping the sand on Point Lookout.
Residents of Point Lookout have pleaded for help for years as their beaches eroded, but their area was part of a larger and long-delayed project planned for most of the beaches on Long Beach Island. That impasse was broken early last month when the Long Beach City Council rejected the $100-million project drawn up by the state and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
