Cops: Bias assault in Valley Stream park
In what Nassau police are calling a bias incident, seven men were arrested Thursday in the assault of two men playing handball at a Valley Stream park.
The suspects, many of them self-proclaimed members of the Bloods street gang, started shouting racial slurs, which escalated into a confrontation in which the two Hispanic victims, both 19, were punched and kicked, Nassau police said.
One victim suffered a black eye and minor cuts and scrapes; the other suffered pain and swelling on the head and face. They declined immediate medical attention.
Police characterized the 3:25 p.m. assault at a Fletcher Avenue park as a bias incident. The assailants were different races, police said, and there were no indications the victims were associated with a gang.
The suspects, all from Valley Stream, were arrested over a six-hour period following the assault, police said.
They were identified as: Nassim Zouioueche, 17, of 1 Damson Lane; Sandhu Suneel, 17, of 87 Clearstream Ave.; Dimitri Cesar, 19, and Nolan Cesar, 17, both of 111 Dean St.; Giscard Friedman, 16, of 897 Downing Rd.; Paul Chery, 18, of 48 W. Valley Stream Blvd.; and Stephan Sutherland, 19, of 83 S. Central Ave.
Each suspect was charged with two counts of third-degree assault. They were released on appearance tickets.
