The Mall in Columbia has been a favorite -- almost the only -- shopping site for residents of Howard County since it opened in 1971. The mall expanded in 1981 and has recently completed a $70 million expansion and renovation plan. Improved parking lots, rest rooms, flooring, escalators and lighting are all part of the newly improved mall, with 30-35 new store spaces. The Mall is now home to 210 merchants, including mall anchors such as Hecht's, Sears and J.C.Penney, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor as well as smaller specialty shops such as Bun Penny, Ann Taylor, Eddie Bauer, Petite Sophisticate, Aeropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Finish Line and Gymboree.
