Abandoned infant found in Queens

Police know the identity of the mother whose infant girl was found abandoned outside a Flushing home, police sources said Monday.

The woman has yet to be located, but sources said detectives learned her name after determining in which hospital the baby was born. The girl, apparently no more than 3 days old, was left outside the front door of a home on Holly Avenue at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Kristina Yu, 24, was heading out of her home to to meet a friend at the time, when she heard crying, then found the infant wrapped in a blanket. Next to the infant was a black handbag filled with diapers and baby formula, police said.

Police said the scars from the baby's umbilical cord cut looked fresh. The baby was in stable condition at Flushing Hospital.

It is possible, police said, that whoever abandoned the infant knew that Yu's father is Rev. Kenny Yu of the Livingstone Presbyterian Church, in Corona. If so, the mother might not be arrested if it is determined that her actions fall under the guidelines of the Safe Haven law, which allows women to leave their unwanted babies at hospitals or houses of worship, no questions asked, police said.
