Hepatitis scare: Whom to call for answers

State and local health officials have provided phone numbers for former patients of Dr. Harvey Finkelstein who are concerned they may have been exposed to hepatitis B or C, or HIV.

For those who got letters saying they were put at risk, and who want to make appointments for testing, call the Nassau County Health Department at: (516) 571-1821.

For other patients who did not get a warning letter, or anyone seeking more information, call the state Health Department at: (800) 278-2965.

Newsday made several calls to these numbers Thursday morning.

The state health department number -- the hepatitis investigation hotline -- was first answered by a voicemail system, which said "All of our operators are assisting other customers," and invited callers to leave a message. Later the line was answered by a live operator.

A first call to Nassau County's number got a busy signal. The second call rang unanswered for several minutes. The third call was picked up promptly.
