LI lawmakers propose gas tax reduction
Assembly Republicans call for 32 cent cut in gas tax during summer
Gasoline prices in New York could be reduced by 32 cents a gallon for the summer if seven Long Island Republican assemblymen have their way.
"We intend to seek passage of legislation that would eliminate the state's gas tax from Memorial Day through Labor Day to lower the cost of gas at the pump and draw in tourist dollars from surrounding states," said Assemb. Rob Walker of Hicksville during a news conference Friday.
He added that he would introduce the bill Monday. Republicans are the minority in the state assembly and will need the support of the Democrat majority.
Walker and his colleagues banded with representatives of the Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association and the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce for a news conference at a service station in East Meadow.
The legislators said tourism draws $4.3 billion annually -- half of it in the summer -- and that increasingly higher gasoline prices could substantially cut that this year.
"There is pain at the pump," said Assemb. David McDonough of Merrick. "Prices are 27 percent higher than they were this time last year, and there is no end to it. They say the price will be $4 by Memorial Day, but looking at the prices now, it's obvious it will hit that price before then."
