Senate votes to suspend state gas tax

ALBANY – After close to three hours of debate, the State Senate passed legislation yesterday that will suspend the state's gasoline tax this summer. However, the measure does not have support in the Assembly, nor approval from the governor.

The bill passed the Senate 46 to 15: all nine senators from Long Island supported the suspension of the 32-cent tax from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

During the debate, senators asked about safeguards against price gouging, environmental opposition to lowering prices, and how consumers will respond after Labor Day weekend, when the gas tax would be reinstated.

Neither Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver nor Gov. David A. Paterson commented on the bill's passage. Spokesmen for both said their stances had not changed.

Silver (D-Manhattan) has opposed the proposal outright. Paterson has called the measure "meritorious" if it could guarantee the savings be passed along to consumers.
