ON THE TRAIL
A day after winning the Potomac Primary, John McCain was
handed another victory when he was unexpectedly endorsed by the entire House GOP leadership. McCain focused much of his criticism yesterday on Barack Obama, Tuesday's Democratic winner. "I respect him and the campaign that he has run, but there's going to come a time when we have to get into specifics," McCain told reporters. Reflecting on the continued lack of enthusiasm among his party voters, his campaign manager Rick Davis said getting the GOP inspired is even more important now than contrasting McCain with Democrats.
GOP rival Mike Huckabee plans to veer off the campaign trail this weekend to give a paid speech in the Cayman Islands. Campaign manager Chip Saltsman said the speech was booked six months ago with an unnamed organization. Asked about the timing, he said Huckabee simply needs a paycheck. "He is not being paid by the federal government to run for president. If he does not do this from time to time, he can't pay his mortgage."
The man who served as national manager of former President Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign, David Wilhelm, endorsed Obama yesterday.
