ELECTION 2008: ONTHETRAIL
Rudy Giuliani spent nearly $7 million in January on a
failed Florida-based presidential strategy, but ended the month and his campaign with nearly $9 million in the bank. According to a monthly report filed with the Federal Election Commission, the former New York mayor raised only $3 million in January. Giuliani had $2.2 million in debt at the end of January, including several charges from vendors that the campaign was disputing. Of his cash on hand, $6 million was designated for the general election and could not have been used in the primary. Giuliani raised a total of $62 million during his yearlong campaign and spent nearly $56 million.
Barack Obama earned the Teamsters union's endorsement, a big boost in the upcoming Texas and Ohio primaries. "The guy has really picked up a momentum," said Teamsters head James Hoffa.
Counting debts, including $5 million she lent her campaign, Hillary Rodham Clinton ended January with about $1.5 million while rival Sen. Barack Obama sat comfortably atop a sum more than 10 times bigger. FEC reports filed yesterday show both the Obama and Clinton campaigns spent at a daily rate of $1 million - $28.5 million for the month by Clinton and $30.5 million for Obama.
