Low family income, not too much candy, is the greatest predictor of tooth decay in children, the leading chronic disease of the young. Lack of adequate dental care can also lead to serious medical conditions such as diabetes and pulmonary problems. So the new mobile dental van funded by the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System and United Way, with a big grant from Horace and Amy Hagedorn Fund, will be a welcome sight in needy communities.



A down day

For Rudy Giuliani, Tuesday was a day of mixed emotions: melancholy and despair. First, it turns out that the Mets - and not his beloved Yankees - have made a deal to bring top pitcher Johan Santana to New York. Then Giuliani finished third in the Florida primary, where he had put all his hopes. Call it a Rudy awakening.
