A motorcyclist was seriously injured on the Long Island Expressway in Holbrook Wednesday when a van swerved into his lane and hit his bike, the Suffolk police said.
Steven Johnson, 58, of Balsam Drive in Medford, was taken by helicopter to the Stony Brook University Hospital with severe head trauma, the police said. He was listed in very critical condition.
Johnson's 2001 Harley Davidson was in the LIE's high-occupancy vehicle lane headed east near Exit 61 at 5:13 p.m. when the van veered into the HOV lane, the police said.
The van, a 1995 Nissan Quest, spun around facing west and was hit by an eastbound GMC Jimmy, injuring the Nissan's driver, Jose Corporan, 41, of the Bronx. Corporan was taken to the Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of bruises and a neck injury.
The driver of the GMC, John Gedde, 38, of Middle Island, was not injured.
Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol officers closed the eastbound LIE for an accident investigation from the time of the crash until about 8:40 p.m.
All three vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
Suffolk police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating the accident. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
