LIRR riders behaving badly: readers' stories

As part of its coverage of the LIRR Commuter's Council project on bad behavior on the trains, Newsday is asking readers to send suggestions on how to correct the behavior problems. Here are some ideas:

How about the people (men and women) who douse themselves with some bottled stench in the morning and then get on the train! They are oblivious to the fact they smell like Fresh Kills on a hot day or that some riders are highly sensitive to smells.

I and my "train buddies" tell people who stink that they can't sit near us, because two of us (truthfully) will be sick.

Most of the time, the smelly party will move, but once, well ... he didn't like what happened to his shoes when someone got sick!

I know that it has to be done in a nice manner, but I think blunt messages on the platform signs and on-board advertisements might help the cause.

"This is a trash pail. This is where garbage goes. Any questions?"

How about a picture of a house with the word "private" below it. Then a picture of a LIRR train with the word "public" below it. ...

RESPECT YOUR FELLOW COMMUTER.

Anyone who has their dirty feet up on the seats where someone else is going to sit is a thoughtless dope and should be fined and thrown off the train.

Thank goodness I transferred my job to LI where I now drive to work! I'd rather sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the LIE than put up with those things on the LIRR!
